Fromurth is home to a vast and layered ecosystem shaped by ancient natural laws, long cycles of evolution, and the omnipresent influence of magic. Scholars generally divide the animals of the world into several broad categories based on size, origin, and interaction with civilization.
Note: I will use real-world animals as size reference
This category includes the animals most frequently encountered by civilized races. They form the backbone of agriculture, trade, and daily life, encompassing livestock, pack animals, common predators, prey species, birds, reptiles, insects, and aquatic life. These creatures follow natural biological patterns and are widely distributed across settled regions.
Through generations of adaptation, some species (both mundane and magical) have been domesticated or magically bonded to intelligent races. These creatures serve as mounts, labor animals, guardians, war-beasts, or companions, forming an essential bridge between civilization and the wild.
Great fauna are naturally occurring animals of exceptional size or strength that surpass common species but remain part of the natural order. Examples include giant elk, towering bears, massive serpents, and colossal marine creatures. While dangerous, they are not inherently unnatural and often inhabit borderlands, deep forests, mountains, and open seas.
Megafauna are truly colossal creatures whose existence defines entire regions. This category encompasses ancient reptilian titans, immense land beasts, sky-dominating creatures, and abyssal leviathans. They generally roam far from permanent settlements, preferring remote wilderness where their immense size and power can be sustained. Their movements can alter terrain, disrupt climates, and give rise to legends.
Magical fauna are creatures whose biology is intrinsically bound to mana. Some are altered variants of natural species, while others are entirely mana-dependent lifeforms. They often display supernatural abilities, heightened resilience, or unusual intelligence, and are commonly found near ley lines, ancient ruins, or areas of strong magical resonance.
These beings exist partially beyond the material realm, manifesting as spirits, elemental incarnations, or ancestral echoes that have taken form. They are typically bound to sacred locations, powerful emotions, or ritual summoning. Their presence follows metaphysical rules rather than biological ones.
Monstrous beasts are aberrant creatures born from magical corruption, failed arcane experiments, or ancient catastrophes. They often defy natural anatomy and behavior, posing severe threats to both ecosystems and settlements. Many are actively hunted or sealed by adventurers and scholars.
Together, these categories describe a world where nature remains vast and dominant, and where survival depends on understanding which creatures may be lived beside, which must be respected from afar, and which should never be disturbed.
